The cool comfort of an afternoon nap, lazing by an open window with a serene view, that is where our very own nap master Sonny is pictured. As I was painting this - Sonny would come and lay beside my easel in the same pose - life imitating art! The cyclamen plant in the window ledge is dancing in the light breeze, waving at the summer sky as it lights up with the afternoon sun. The patterns and style of the open window are part of my homage to Matisse and the Fauve painters who often depicted the interior and exterior world through the device of a window. I am intrigued by the idea of looking out from within a contained decorative space to the open natural world. The dreaming pup romps through a candy colored world in the reflections of the windowed door panel.
Contemporary Expressive Colorist Cathy Carey was born in Washington, DC. and grew up in Alexandria, VA. She was educated at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, and received a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Several years later Carey moved to Southern California and continued painting, and started a business in graphic design and illustration. She works in all media’s including Photoshop to create images. She currently maintains a studio and teaches workshops in San Diego, CA and Santa Fe, NM., and has taught at the Art Institute of CA in San Diego.
