This painting is done from sketches I made during a fascinating off road jeep tour I took in the northern Sonoran desert of Arizona in October. We saw a beautiful sunset that was incredibly inspiring. Out jeep expedition leader was very knowledgeable about the botanical and historical aspects of the area we were in, on BLM land at Table Mesa, with the Bradshaw mountains in the background. I see the cholla cactus dancing with their shadows in the last light of the day. The bounce and pop of the creamy yellows with the lavender orchids. The sunsets in the desert can be stunning. The movement in the earth and sky are the melody of energy and sounds I feel in the solitude of the desert.
Contemporary Expressive Colorist Cathy Carey was born in Washington, DC. and grew up in Alexandria, VA. She was educated at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, and received a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Several years later Carey moved to Southern California and continued painting, and started a business in graphic design and illustration. She works in all media’s including Photoshop to create images. She currently maintains a studio and teaches workshops in San Diego, CA and Santa Fe, NM., and has taught at the Art Institute of CA in San Diego.
