Watermelon Window Tank Top

This painting represents a time machine for me! My memories of Richmond VA took me back to a house I lived in many years ago, in the west end. The scene through the window is of that little house and our willow tree with the periwinkles growing under it and the flowering crepe myrtle, the flowers and grassy yard. The watermelon, summer daisies and purple flowers with the lemons are the epitome of summer! The motif of the flowers in the vase and watermelons are in homage to Matisse and the other Fauve expressionist painters. The warm sun colors balance with the cool pool colors and flavors of peach and strawberry sherbet fill out the palette.

Contemporary Expressive Colorist Cathy Carey was born in Washington, DC. and grew up in Alexandria, VA. She was educated at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, and received a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Several years later Carey moved to Southern California and continued painting, and started a business in graphic design and illustration. She works in all media’s including Photoshop to create images. She currently maintains a studio and teaches workshops in San Diego, CA and Santa Fe, NM., and has taught at the Art Institute of CA in San Diego.
