Twilight is my favorite times of day up in the aspen forests above Santa Fe. The shadows lengthen and the sky turns amazing turquoise colors as it dips into azure, indigo and deep purples of night. The flickering golden colors of the aspen leaves shimmer in the changing light, and it creates a magical stage setting for evening to arrive.
Aspens grow in colonies, from a single seedling, and have roots deep in the earth that are able to spread and grow, some colonies living for thousands of years. Important members of the forest community, their bark feeds many of the forest animals and they are protected from forest fires because of their deep roots. Seeing a stand of aspens I am reminded of a large extended family, on the surface the young and old all standing together as golden sentinels, underground their roots entwined for longevity.

Contemporary Expressive Colorist Cathy Carey was born in Washington, DC. and grew up in Alexandria, VA. She was educated at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, and received a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Several years later Carey moved to Southern California and continued painting, and started a business in graphic design and illustration. She works in all media’s including Photoshop to create images. She currently maintains a studio and teaches workshops in San Diego, CA and Santa Fe, NM., and has taught at the Art Institute of CA in San Diego.
