Last June I spent some time in Torrey Pines Nature Reserve, sketching and taking photos and hiking along the bluffs above the ocean. Such a spectacular place! It is thrilling to see the many faces of erosion that the wind and rain carve into the sandstone hills. I love the woodsy scent of sage and the spice bush and the tart aroma of the lemonade berry. I wanted to balance the colors in the sage, and lavenders by offsetting them with the burgundys and creams of the sandstone cliffs. The rich juniper green of Torrey pines is so beautiful with the burnt sienna of its pine cone and deep purple burnt bark colors. The turquoise sea foam to azure ocean depths complete the soft natural colors of a warm spring day after the fog has pulled back out to sea.
Contemporary Expressive Colorist Cathy Carey was born in Washington, DC. and grew up in Alexandria, VA. She was educated at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, and received a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Several years later Carey moved to Southern California and continued painting, and started a business in graphic design and illustration. She works in all media’s including Photoshop to create images. She currently maintains a studio and teaches workshops in San Diego, CA and Santa Fe, NM., and has taught at the Art Institute of CA in San Diego.
