Last summer Brian and I went to the Canadian Rocky mountains. This scene depicts Banff, the mountain behind was called Pyramid Mountain, and beautifully reigned over the Banff Springs hotel where we stayed. The horses are an even more stylized version than I normally do of the paired horses. I used as inspiration some of Fanz Marc's horses. The colors of the horses are echoed in the colors of the mountain where the light and cool colors blend and braid into a marriage of harmony and contrast. I wanted to show the tenderness of the horses for each other in contrast to the cruel way the wild horses of America are being treated, when they are ripped from the fabric of their world and their families torn apart and isolated, so that ranchers can graze cattle on the lands that are their domain.
Contemporary Expressive Colorist Cathy Carey was born in Washington, DC. and grew up in Alexandria, VA. She was educated at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, and received a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Several years later Carey moved to Southern California and continued painting, and started a business in graphic design and illustration. She works in all media’s including Photoshop to create images. She currently maintains a studio and teaches workshops in San Diego, CA and Santa Fe, NM., and has taught at the Art Institute of CA in San Diego.
